Great American Mail Race

Does anyone have experience with the Great American Mail Race? Where did it originate?

I have read some individual references to participating in the Mail Race but most of them just describe how it involves sending letters...not much available on how it fits into standards/curriculum plans or about student response to the activity. I am wondering how it started and whether participation has been successful at the junior high level.
