Can anyone accurately define what it means to "drift" in life as it relates to life choices?

I read the statement "don't drift into law school to avoid hard choices in life" and, I am still wondering what exactly that means. How does one "drift" into law school without hard work, determination, and conscious effort in a major that is anything but easy?

If the statement means that one is looking for professional credentials that can cut a wide swath across many fields and open doors of opportunity w/o much effort, then please define.

Doesn't "drifting" and "law school" seem to be an oxymoron to you? Teleologically speaking, one cannot drift into law school without premeditation that is rational (hopefully), therefore "drifting" is impossible.

Thank you,
Joe

I think this is what it means:

Many people move through their lives not having a particular goal in mind. They didn't want to be a doctor since they were four. They never dream of having children or becoming a teacher. These people were just sitting back and letting this happen. Then, something comes along and acts as a catalyst. Here is a hypothetical example: A girl is just entering college. She has taken some classes but has not set degree in mind. Around the same time, her sister moves back into town with her two kids. The girl starts to help with the children as her sister is a busy single mom. The girl discovers that she enjoys helping them with homework and working with them. She needs some extra money for personal things and her sister suggests she start substituting at the children's school. The girl does. She goes through the training and begins working at the elementry school. She continues to take classes but really still does not have a goal. The girl is a popular sub and is offer a long-term position for a teacher on maternity leave. The principal has observed her and knows a position will be open at the school the following year. He asks her if she is working on becoming a teacher. The girl says she doesn't have a plan for what she will become. The principal suggests she start working on becoming a teacher. The girl is surprised but agrees. It is the perfect career for her. She has drifted into the career of "Teacher" without realizing it. She kind of just fell into it.

I hope this makes sense... :)

I answered in another thread you started. I'll move my post into this thread. I talked about drifting into becoming a teacher, but you can use law school as well. Same analogy just different locations and slightly different circumstances.

It could also be going into the profession because dad was a lawyer, grandpa was a lawyer, great grandpa was a lawyer....you get the drift!
