I was wanting to do a math journal this year and I am looking for ideas. I was going to do a problem of the day. Also had thoughts about having kids explain problems step by step and how they solved the problem (picture can be included), ways they use math at home, measuring things, etc. I also thought about with the problem of the day maybe putting a star on each one they get correct and then rewarding for so many stars?? Just brainstorming....wondering if anybody else has a journal for math and would like to share what they do.

I saw this done last year - when you ask kids to explain how to do a problem, tell them to "Tell me the story" of how you solved it". This gives them the idea of what you want them to do. Also brings in language arts to math.

I love your idea of looking into how math could be used at home. It could be a great way of helping your students think outside the box and realize that math goes well beyond the classroom.

Best of luck to you! :)
