Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm currently researching funding in the US education system. Living in the UK, I'm finding it hard to get to grips with the basics of your system....

So, am I right in thinking schools get funds from both the federal government and your state?

How do you think this ARRA stimulus package will affect your school/district? Are there specific things that the government wants you to purchase with this extra money? Are specific subjects or grades being targetted?

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Rose

I know a lot of our stimulus money has been earmarked for capital improvements or special ed. Capital improvements include air conditioning for the district, new roofing project, repair of exterior issues (broken guttering, damaged soffits, replacing doors and locks). Our district is small, so we won't be seeing a large chunk of this money.

My school district is not hopeful of ever seeing a cent of the stimulus funding. This is due to the fact that the money really is not there and the battle to try and raise taxes is raging at the federal level.

Each state has their own formula on how money is distributed. If you google the topic, you will discover that some states per capita spending on students can very greatly. Also the wages of teachers is not uniform either.

Individual counties or parrishes with in a state may also have a great disparity in funding.

Inner city schools and rural schools have less funding in general than suburb school districts.

With the high cost of mandated curriculum and the focus being on standardized test performances and the poor economy many school are no longer offering the arts (music, drama, art) or sports.

If you google the California Teacher Association or National Teachers Associate you will find position papers on the subject. An opposing view can be found by googleing tax payer advocacy groups.

Hopes this helps you a bit.
