hello everyone,
i am a teacher from india. there is very little importance given to early career awareness here.we dont have any career day nor any dept concerned with it.here the parents have a larger say in a childs career than the child himself.also it is not considered important to link the school to the actual workforce.students start thinkin abt career and work only after graduation..i am making an attempt to change this picture in whatever little way i can.so i am planning to conduct a workshop on importance of career awareness for school kids.i want to introduce them to the world of work and explain them the importance of planning a career, knowing their interest and pursuing what THEY like and not what the parents say.i would appreciate if u can guide me regarding how to go abt organising this workshop.and making it very interesting for the kids.the targeted students will be 8,9 10th grade.please help me..pleassse..

Do you have a particular subject area? For example, do you teach Language Arts, Math, Science, ect.?

Sounds like a great idea for a program! I love the idea of getting the students thinking about what kind of career they would like. Do you think you will encounter any resistance from parents if you are encouraging students to think more independently?

If I were creating a program like yours, I would probably start off by having the students take an interest inventory. You can find some online. The ones I have found were created in the United States, so I don't know if there would be any type of cultural bias in the inventory.

After that, I would have students research a profession that relates to the response they get from their interest inventory. Perhaps have them find the type of training that is necessary for that profession and the wage they could expect to make in such a career.

Depending on how in-depth you want this program to be, you could try to get some guest speakers to talk to the students about their careers.

I wish you the best of luck with your project! Stop back and keep us posted on your progress.
