I am currently teaching a low ability yr 7 class (their reading ages range from 5-10) and I am in desperate need of a good narrative poem.
I have had a look at other sites and think some of the suggestions are too challenging. It cant be too long (which is the main problem I'm facing) as they lose interest but it needs to have enough in it so they can identify poetic devices and maybe create a story board of events.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you

What I do a lot for my preschoolers is write it myself. You could easily do this with something simple like buying something at the store or watching tv.
Another option is looking at the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul books. These are a large number of narrative poems and can be found in most libraries. Because they are written by teenagers for teenagers, they may hold the students interest quite well.

You could use almost anything by Dr. Seuss. It is easily accessible for students and it allows for some very imaginative lessons. "The Lorax" is a great narrative poem, that will certainly keep their interest. It uses onomaeteopia (sorry I never spell that word correctly), simile, alliteration, and imagery. For most of the poem there is a set rhyme scheme, and it deals with an issue that the students are bound to identify with; the environment. There is a video available also, but difficult to find.
