I am going to school to be a teacher and I am having to do
a project on increasing LEAP scores. I had to come up with
two ways to increase scores and evaluate those options.
The two I chose were the PASS program and after school
tutoring. If anyone particiapes in these two options I
would appreciate some help.

PASS Program
* If you used it have you seen it to be effective?
* Was it easy to implement with your students?
* What students are chosen to participate?
* Does it cost the students or the school?

After school tutoring
* Is it effective in helping students pass?
* Was it easy to implement? Or was it hard findng a
teacher to stay and work with students.
* If you do after school tutoring was it hard finding the
time to participate?
* What is the cost for the school or the students? I am
assuming the teacher gets paid extra for doing this.

I would really really appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks very much!

About after school tutoring: We have before school tutoring for test prep purposes only. The district took funds from the home tutoring program and put some of it in this budget. Therefore, teachers get paid to tutor elementary kids in groups no bigger than 4 or 5 students three mornings a week from Sept. - begin of Mar. The last state test in grade 5 ends first week of March. Only at risk kids are invited to attend. I believe there is a positive, but minimal effect. We also have Homework Helpers. This is an after school program. The TAs or full time aides run this 30 min. 4 day a week program, and are paid by having them start their day 30 min. later. Once again, the principal identifies students who truly have little or no support at home, and only these students are invited to attend. It does help the kids get some of their homework done, who otherwise would do nothing. Because it is expanding, some High School students who need to do Community Sevice are now being used, too. Once again, the results are positive, but the effect is minimal because of the time constraint of 30 min.

I'm sorry I can't help. My center doesn't have these programs. Good luck with your assignment though! :)

What does the LEAP assess? What are the students expected to do? I haven't heard of the PASS program but I have done some after school tutoring. Our biggest problem was getting teachers to sign up. We tutored an hour after school and were paid $20 per hour. I think we tutored 2 or 3 afternoons a week; one day focused on Math and another on Communication Arts. As far as helping student performance, I'm not sure. We didn't start tutoring until mid-second semester and our test was given in May. I don't think the kids benefited much from it. Finding materials that everyone could agree upon was also a challenge.

I hope this helps! Good luck!!

I participate in both...PASS and after school tutoring. This has been my experience.

PASS Program
* If you used it have you seen it to be effective? Yes, it seems to help the students.
* Was it easy to implement with your students? Yes, it is easy to implement because it is online.
* What students are chosen to participate? We have all students login, not just LEAP students.
* Does it cost the students or the school? No, it is all online and free

After school tutoring
* Is it effective in helping students pass? It depends on the student. If they are willing to learn, tutoring does help.
* Was it easy to implement? Or was it hard findng a
teacher to stay and work with students. It is hard finding teachers to stay after school even though we do get paid.
* If you do after school tutoring was it hard finding the
time to participate? It does take away from your home life even though it's not everyday. In my opinion, it's worth it.
* What is the cost for the school or the students? I am
assuming the teacher gets paid extra for doing this. We get paid $20.00 per hour. Students don't pay anything.
