I remember when I was growing up I had an enormous amount of homework each night. I did not enjoy it, but that's the way it was. For the most part it was Vocabulary. We had to write the word, define it and then use the word in a sentence. 20 words 20 times each at least I say because I do not aceually remember, but I remember being busy until dinner.
So much has changed these days I don't know what's the standard anymore. My sons' 5th grade teacher tells me that when I was a student we had to know 50,000 Vocabulary words and that these days ithat requirement is down to 10,000 words. What a difference!
Thus our kids watch too much television, play too many games and for my children it has been my fault, however I am putting a stop to it now.
My plan is to get my cable turned off. That's step one anyway.I will have to miss some football games in the process, but I feel I must. You have to lead by example.
If cartoons were like they used to be, they used to be aimed at adults and now they are juust plain stupid. When I was a kid I watched them and learned so much of who I am today is because of Bugs Bunny. Todays children for the most part never heard of him! What a baby-sitter.
Then there are the multipication facts. We were not allowed to use the back of the composition book we had to memorize the whole thing. I understand it is still a practice to teach them, but I think my son was expected to know them by now, but somehow passed 4th grade math without doing so.
I have him counting by sevens all this week and by sixes or eights next. I really think that is the best method for the answers are right there in front of you and alls it is is 12 numbers in each line.
He knows what 12x12 is since he was 8. Alas, woe is me.:gabby:
Today is my first time to post so I will go do just that, see ya
Thanks for letting me vent!
