I am a 26yr old man, who has always dreamt of teaching. being up in front of a class of inquisitive minds looking for you for guidance, feeling the reward of seeing a young mind develop and discover things they never thought they would be able to.

I hope to pass on some of the things i have learnt throughout my life, i have always focused on training and teaching those around me with this always playing a key role in all of my jobs so far.

I left school with 1 A level in sports studies and an AS level in psychology, i know the traditional way is a degree, PGCE etc, but with a home, family and mortgage i don't have the time or money to go to uni. since leaving education i am half way through the EDCL and am also looking into the FA coaching Badge for football.

I have spoken to friends who have worked as teaching assistants and teachers and they have told me that you can learn on the job Does anyone know what they would have been refering to or any ways into teaching?

I'm really hoping someone out there has some suggestions.

thanks in advance.

Hi Craig,
it does not say where in the UK you are so I am going to give you info based on my experience as the mentor of a ta taking a teaching degree in the north of England. There are several possible routes but all require a degree, no short cuts there. You could work as a teaching assistant in a school and enrol on a 2 year teaching foundation degree which runs part time. Edgehill university run such a course, on Mondays from 2 pm to 8 pm. After this you complete a 2 year teachers cert. at Edgehill where you embark on a series of teaching practices. The school will need to be part of this and need to support you and mentor you.
Alternatively keep your job and do a 4 year part time degree plus 1 year PGCE. There are merits and pitfalls to all these suggestions.
Good luck
