Recently, I found out that the wipes, I sent with my child to school in beginning of the year were hazardous! It was right there on the back of the label "Hazardous to Humans and domestic pets" I never paid it any attention until someone told me to look. I begin to look at the all labels on the cleaning products I used.It was on the disinfecting spray, too! Why would anyone sell something the would be hazardous to their kids? Well, money, of course! Is money more important than people's health, especially our children? I did some research and found the 150 chemicals that are commonly found in the home are linked to allegeries, asthma, ezcema, and even cancer! This scared me!! When tell other people about what I found they are surprised, but they keep using the same stuff they always use and send it to class with their kids. Does anyone REALLY care?:waving:

That's why I buy all eco-friendly cleaning supplies. I think it's really important to care for ourselves and the environment.

At our center, we use bleach and water for everything. The ratio is varied depending on the situation. There is even a three sink cycle for dishwashing. The third sink contains a cap of bleach in a full basin of water. The cups soak before being removed and allowed to air dry in a rack.
I really thougt it was odd not to do a second rinse after the bleach soak, but iit isn't needed. It is best to let the cups dry thoroghly before another use.
Yes, bleach is very dangerous. However, it can be a great cleaning tool if used properly. On the other hand, you really don't know what is in those wipes or sprays. Is it just some chemical with a nice cleaning supply smell? What type of residue is left? How long should you wait before human or animal contact with the surface?

I've found that I can clean pretty much anything I need to clean with bleach or vinegar mixed with water.
It's not just cleaning supplies. There are plenty of products people use daily that are hazardous.

My full time aide is very atune to keeping the classroom clean and germ free. She is also very aware of kids with asthma and allergies. She sprays Lysol twice a day throughout my room. So, what happened? After one of her Lysol spraying sessions, the kids come back in the room. One of the kids starts coughing and choking. At first I thought he was trying to get attention, but I realized he really couldn't stop. I opened all the windows and alerted the nurse he was on his way to her office. We deducted that it was the Lysol spray which set him off and affected his breathing. He was fine upon return to the room. By then, I had aired out the room. You never know what cleaning products can affect people.

Yes, people care. Some of us have switched to "green" cleaning products. However, one of the best and most basic original disinfectants is vinegar. This is also harmful if swallowed. The companies that make cleaning products must print that they are harmful for children so that we won't let our kids drink this stuff. Water can be used to clean, but it can also drown. My point is that while the warnings on the backs of cleaning products are harsh, the companies mean that the products are harmful if used an a way inconsistent with the product directions. As for sending your child to school with wipes, I would recommend that you teach your child to wash his or her hands often and thoroughly. My children are 5 and 6 and I teach at a middle school. Our school nurse has recommended against wipes when water is available because they do not kill everything and what they leave behind is made stronger. There are microbes out there that are now immune to antibiotics partially through the overuse of antibacterial soaps, wipes and sprays.

The dosage makes a big difference. For some people, small amounts of these chemicals can cause issues. For most, it takes a lot more. But, companies still need to list that the chemicals in the cleaning products are hazardous, but they probably won't tell you the dose. If you want to know how hazardous these chemicals are, look up the MSDS for them. This Material Safety Data Sheet is available for ALL chemicals. It tells you the dose that's dangerous, what to do for first aid, and a bunch of other information.
Chlorine can be poisonous too. Yet, we consume it every day!

I think we all care when it comes to the health and safety of our children. We just aren't aware of these things such as you weren't mmakintunde Bleach is very dangerous just too much is hard to escape, but how much do you need? I like the sound of antibacterial. That's what I try to keep at bay but I will read those labels tomorrow!

20 years ago our office manager hammered a nail into the wall of her office to hang a picture. She noticed some dust coming out of the wall and asked one of the workers for building services what it was. He chuckled and told her she wouldn't have to worry about for 20 years. Now she has breast cancer.
