Hello All, I am currently doing my student teaching in 3rd grade in Michigan, and I've decided to undertake a "school meeting" A.K.A. all school assembly.
The assignment is to do something fun but somewhat educational for a school assembly. This is my chance to get my name out there to the school (and the principal!) The activity only needs to be about 10-15 minutes long, in presentation form for the whole school to see. We are working on the Core Democratic Values in Social Studies- I was thinking of a song or something to present this topic to the school (grades k-5) let me know if any of you have a reference or idea for me. Thanks in advance!!
core democratic values. can you give some more info for the Canadian who isn't sure exactly what that means?

Veteran's Day is coming up in November. You could have the VFW come out and do a presentation of the colors.

Is this going to be a PowerPoint type approach? Can you do something that involves the audience? I remember seeing a magic show that worked in things like liberty, freedom of speech, ect. It was pretty cool.

Core Democratic Values are life, liberty, the persuit of happiness, justice, truth, diversity, equality, etc. This is not a powerpoint, it is kid-involved (I will be presenting, but the kids have to be FULL part of this)...Thanks for the replies- keep up the good ideas!!
oooo...combining ideas here. Last year for remembrance day (Vetran's day, but in Canada...it's a little different) our kids illustrated the poem In Flander's Fields, which is recited EVERY remembrance day in Canada. the illustrations were put on powerpoint and projected on a screen while the kids stood at the frond and recited the poem, their images projected above their heads. It was AWESOME!
You could do the same sort of thing -- have your kids illustrate examples of the values, and write an example for each (perhaps in the form of "liberty is _____________"), to be read over a mic as their pic goes up. Just like the kids up in the order the pics are scanned, have them read their sentence and move off to the side. Relatively simple, quick, powerful, and involves everyone.
At my kids' school, teachers had every child in the school write down names of relatives (alive & deceased) who had served in the military. The parents helped the children with the names & service. Then when the kids got to school the teachers gave out xeroxed stars. On each star, the child wrote the soldier's name, relationship (grandpa, uncle, etc.), and branch of military service. They also had a space to list in which war the person served (if war time). At an assembly, they combined all of the stars into a giant wall on stage as the background for the patriotic assembly.
