Has anyone taught the novel "The Freedom Writers?"

I haven't but I saw the teachers guide at Barnes and Noble yesterday. It would probably be pretty inspiring!

I have the novel, movie, and teaching guide (and also Erin's other novel Teach with your heart).

It is definitely a powerful and moving book. Depending on where you are teaching, your students may get something out of the book or may not. The students in the novel are very poor and their teacher evokes a sense of belonging and the need to try out of the students.

Overall, no matter students' financial status, they will learn something and ultimately want to watch the movie!

I would definitely recommend the novel for your students.

We read this book during one of my teaching courses at University. It is such a good book and it seems to be written near high school level. Our teacher had us each review a chapter and come up with an activity that directly related to the content of the chapter. It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the book! She also let us watch the movie on the last day of class, it was really neat to see some of the real characters at the end.

What age group is this novel appropriate for?
