:reading:When kids finish early (and it isn't slopwork) what do you allow them to do? I'm not a fan of having them draw because it seems to cause some kids to rush through their work just to be able to do it and I end up playing policewoman. Here are ones I thought I might have them do:

IF I FINISH EARLY, WHAT CAN I DO?

• Silent read
• Do homework
• Write in your writing journal
• Study
• Practice math facts and problems
• Work ahead on your DLR (Daily Language Review)
• Work ahead on your DMP (Daily Math Practice)
• Work ahead on your cursive/handwriting

With permission you may be able to:
• help a classmate with an assignment
• use computer for a school project or assignment
• use computer for educational purposes
• practice Ultrakey

If you find you finish early frequently, talk to Miss G about doing a special report on something you find interesting and is school appropriate. Some topics include US history, how to solve social (friend) problems, Native American tribes, book recommendation poster, etc. Please check with Miss G before beginning any special report.
:)

Any other ideas??

i have crates in my room set up with file folders of independent activites that they can work on. I have lots of them set up now. Some examples are sudoku puzzles, perplexar puzzles, logic problems, daily word ladders, etc. They get to choose what they want and I give them stickers on a chart for completing the activity correctly. Then, I add a percentage of what they complete each quarter to their grades on their report cards.

We are so bogged down with key terms for the NYS SS Test and Math Test, that I let kids go to the computer and create crossword and workd search puzzles with the key term lists for the week. (puzzlemaker.com) For every puzzle they create they earn behavioral points. If I use their puzzle as a class assignment, they earn extra points. There are many websites they can go to reinforce the content areas you are working on. You need to find them and keep a list for next year. The first time around it will take time. Of course there are all the suggestions teacheramy gave in her response, too. Good luck!

Every month I make a packet of work geared toward each student of work for them to complete. I teach a sped ed multi-level class so not everyone can do the same work. The packet contains some fun learning puzzles and some work that helps them focus on a particular skill. I also make a lot of file folder games and let them work on them anytime they finish early.
