Are they worth it? If any of you are members, which one(s) do you belong to and why? I'm especially interested in organizations in Texas, since that's where I hail from.

Depends on what you are teaching. I teach science and belong to the NSTA - great expenditure. There are other groups for each discipline. Also the National Middle School Association is good too if you teach middle school.

The National Education Association (NEA) usually has state and local groups. For liability purposes, I think it is helpful to belong to such an organization unless you take out separate liability insurance.

I teach math and also belong to NTCM, though if I had to choose only one, it would be NEA.

In Texas, you have TEA (your local NEA branch). There are a couple of others. I always joined ATPE (Association of Texas Professional Educators, I think) strictly for the liability coverage. That is really all the unions are good for in Texas. Though sometimes the discount cards come in handy, too.

Of course I'm in the union. Heck yes it's worth it.
