Hi guys.
I'm looking for an inexpensive podium or lectern for my classroom. Anyone have any advice on websites or stores to search?
Thanks in advance.

eBay! I adore eBay.
Also, try stores like Staples and OfficeMaz.

Also try music stands. I requested a podium, and someone showed me a music stand that offered the same thing. It was something I forgot about.
Check out Craig's list for your town--they have things for sale, and they all have a "free" section.
Try any Good Will, Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity.

Ask other teachers in your building. I had one in my classroom that I didn't use, so it was just taking up space. It took about 20 minutes for someone to claim it after I sent an email to the other teachers in the building.
Also, if you (or someone you know) are handy, they shouldn't be too hard to build unless you want something fancy.

Try the search term "mobile stand up workstation" or "stand up laptop workstation." I found several good ones on Overstock that are really reasonably priced. I am searching for a podium or lectern, also, but they are really expensive.

Here's an update... I decided to have one built, and it turned out very nicely. Thank you all for your advice!

I was just wondering who built it for you. Sometimes when we need something built in my district we have a maintenance crew who have excellent carpentry skills. Often we can call upon them, and often they are able to obtains scrap lumber, left over paint & brushes, etc. It's amazing what they can do. I'll give them a few bucks or buy them a nice lunch. They are very appreciative.

I actually got a family friend to make it. I never thought of my district's maintenance crew, but that's a great idea.

I am also a new teacher. I don't yet know if there is a podium in my classroom or not. If not my husband is going to build me one. Nothing fancy. I guarantee you it will weigh a ton when he gets finished with it. I requested he put lockable wheels on it so I can move it around.

Fluffycrane,
My room actually came with a podium, but it was the kind that was quite similar to a music stand. Most classrooms here in SC, or at least the ones I have had the pleasure of seeing, already have a podium. I wanted something a bit sturdier though, so I opted for a wooden one. Good luck with the building of your own. Check your room first though; your husband may not have to go through the trouble.
