Hi everyone! I am very excited about the possibility of becoming a teacher, yet anxious. I am still in grad school, and I have my "initial certs" but I am not done with my degree yet. I was hoping to be "emergency certified" by a local urban district. I have put my resume out to a few urban districts that were in need of special ed. teachers.

My question is... when do districts do MOST of their hiring? june? july? Should I have received a call by now? I have heard that the urban districts are a little slower with their hiring, but i don't know if that is just a rumor...

Any ideas? Are your districts basically done hiring or only beginning?

Thanks!
Gina

I think it varies. Some districts try to get their hiring done ASAP, but many times there are changes that take place over the summer leaving districts looking for teachers later in the summer, too. I was hired 3 days before I had to report to school because of a teacher that waited until the last minute to resign.

Keep your hopes up and keep calling around.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Districts vary as widely in hiring as in other areas. However, at least one teacher at my school every year for the last five was hired two weeks before school started because someone left our site. Be vigilant on the web pages that post positions. Good luck.

I think it also depends on the state you are in. There are drop dead dates in some states that if you resign after that date, you'll pay a fee for breaking your contract. I was hired after that date for my first position, and that seemed to be when a lot of jobs opened up for some reason. Good luck!!

I was hired during this week last year for my first position. I know that my team teacher was hired about one week before school started and another teacher I know was hired about 2 days before time for the start of school. So, just keep looking! Good Luck! =D

Last year, I was interviewed in early June but I wasn't officially offered the job until early August due to licensing. I was licensed in WI, but the job was in IN. They didn't want to offer the job until some of the licensing stuff was sorted out. Though as it turns out, they screwed up my licensing.

I'm currently waiting to hear if my transfer request will go through. My school district is still posting jobs internally, which slows down any outside hiring. Depending on the districts you're looking at, they may be trying internal transfers first. That could delay hiring you from the outside.

I'm from Canada, so I don't know the US system(s), but I expect that september enrollment variance from June estimates may open up a few spots, too (I.e. those kids who just show up on the first day but aren't registered). then, of course, teachers have babies, so there may be some prime maternity leave positions mid-year. Keep on truckin', and something good will turn up. Good Luck!

I agree. It is just going to depend. The center I'm at right now closes for serious cleaning and staff devlopment during the month before school starts. So, hiring needs to be arranged before that.
