In my district it is rare to get a teacher's aide unless you teach special education. So when I recieved a bilingual teacher's aide to work with my English Language Learners for 45 minutes a day, I did not know what to do. We do not get any time to plan together or discuss student progress. She is there everyday for 45 minutes to work with nine students. This is only my second year teaching, and I need some ideas to take full advantage of her time with students. Does anyone have some ideas?

It would help if we knew what you teach.

If you don't have time for the face-to-face, try e-mail. You can discuss lesson plans, objectives, ect. this way.
I agree that knowing what you teach would be helpful in making suggestions.

I teach a self contained, general education fifth grade class. I have 30 students and the bilingual aid is only allowed to work with the nine students classified as English Language Learners in the class. These students all speak English but struggle with the academic language. Right now I have her pull some of the students and do mini lessons on grammar, spelling, and reading comprehension from the supplemental material for English Language Learners that came with the language arts curriculum. It seems like there are better things to do than this, but I don't have any good ideas. Please help.

I will try email and see if that helps. It is not ideal but better than no communication.

That's true. Sometimes email is a good thing; I find that it challenges my explanation skills to see how effective I can get my point across when I'm not speaking or using hand gestures.

Oh come on ....I think that comment belongs in the middle ages with all the other restrictive @@@@...we live in a multi cultural society and if you really want to press that policy then Americans would go no where .You are the least lingual nation in the world . If other nationalities did not have English as their second language people like you would never survive outside America VIVA LA DIFFERENCE
No offence to you more reasonable Americans!!

The way you carry yourself in this forum is quite reminiscent of the behavior and attitude exhibited by a former member who was recently banned.
I find the banning of this other member and your recent appearance to be an interesting coincidence.
The person who was banned enjoyed making deliberately provocative statements just to get a rise out of other members.
A sentiment like the one you just expressed is precisely the sort of elitist knee jerk comment that I would expect from the other member.
If you are in fact ChocolateNewOrleans, newly resurrected with a different ISP address, one would hope that you would have learned from your previous errors in judgment. If you are not CNO and your arrival at this forum is merely coincidental with that person's well deserved banning, you should consider minding your P's and Q's.
In general, verbal piddling on our cyber floor is considered bad form.

I suppose your more direct verbal attacks that got you a warning and a thread locked is much more acceptable, then huh? I'll follow by your lead.

For a novice member, you're really hell bent on pushing buttons.
May I remind you that the warning and locked thread also applied to you?
I have 1,467 posts on this forum and have not been banned. If you read my posts, the vast majority of them have been supportive of other members.
In contrast, you're a novice member with less than 30 posts. Since you've been here, you've made a blatantly racist comment and then got into my face about a pending district cell phone policy that has no bearing upon you or your district.
If you keep going the way you're going, I don't think you'll be here much longer.
So ... feel free to yip away. Sooner or later you'll overstep the bounds of propriety and the site administrator will ban you. :)

I got no warning, I didn't directly attack other members. Who do you think reported the thread.
Didn't know that expertise in education relied on post counts. I'll start adding
"you're doing a great job"
to 100 posts a day and next week, I'll be as expert as you are I guess.
I could say the same about you there, keep calling new members names, I wonder how long you'll be saved by your 1000 posts before you are banned.
btw - thread reported for harassment.

Adults. That is what this forum is for. For adults to share their ideas, and provide help to other teachers. Why do I feel like I need to babysit every conversation?
I find myself having to come in here to read through threads to make sure that nobody is stepping out of line every hour or so.
I closed the other thread because there were 'not-so-nice' comments coming from different sides. I figured closing the thread before it got further out of control might be warning enough - and provide an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the types of interaction that aren't welcome on these boards.
I have my own opinions about why this is occurring, and I see that there is some instigation going on. I reserve the right to ban anyone for any reason at any time. No warnings are necessary. Why make comments that will force my hand?
My main job here at The Teacher's Corner is to program utilities for teacher's to use in their classrooms. This programming requires a high degree of concentration, and it is frustrating when people intentionally want to cause unrest, because it unnecessarily breaks me away from my main job.
Can we just think before we post?
Thank you.

I was fine until I was sought out once again, simply because the cook didn't like what I said. 1000 posts must mean he knows what's best for me on cell phones as well as teaching, I guess.

I've already placed TW on my ignore list ... but if you follow his posts, you will see that I'm not the only member that this person has provoked. I am actually quite impressed that other members have shown a much greater strength of character than yours truly by NOT allowing themselves to be drawn into confrontation.
Thank you for continuing to monitor the boards. :)
T.Corner is a great website. Part of the reason it's a great website is because it encourages mutual support from an on-line community of caring educators.
The "let's say anything" attitude and in-your-face confrontational styles that appear to be the hallmarks of other sites are thankfully not tolerated at this site.
One hopes that TW will begin making a positive contribution to this forum ... and if not ...

Does she have a copy of your lesson plans? Does she also have copies of all textbooks you're using?
The better prepared she is in knowing what you're teaching, the more she'll be able to help your students.

How has multi-culturalism helped you guys on that side of the pond. Last I checked, muslim riots weren't happening over here.
keep up with your appeasement though, it proved it's worth before WWII, why wouldn't it work now, (lest you have forgotten your history)

I never suggested mexicans stop being mexican, I'm saying, if you choose to live in another country, don't expect them to have to adapt to you.

grrrr you got banned before I could respond
the freedom to demonstrate is a human right in England...the choice of an individual to use violence to achieve their purpose is down to free will the biggest mistake you could make Tookie is to assume you know our society ...any more than I would claim to know yours.....
I will always support multi culturality because I believe the world is global and not national....hence I leave my biased nationalistic tendencies in the toliet with all the other @@@@
