My school was on the news....what silliness!

Just read the article. I agree, it is silly; however, the girls, I think deliberately, challenged what they were told not to do. Now, unfortunately, they will have to suffer the consequences.

In my opinion, if they were allowed to get out of this situation with a slap on the back of the hand, then, they might have decided to challenge other rules. Therefore, I disagree with, "... some observers are saying police and school officials went overboard, ..." and "It certainly seems that this was an overreaction to a situation that could have been handled differently," said Linda Burt, Wyoming director of the ACLU."

I believe in fairness and that the punishment should fit the "crime." But, in this case, it appears that this was a deliberate act of defiance by these young ladies. Perhaps they will think twice the next time.

I agree with busbus. The students were warned. They disregarded instructions and deserve whatever consequences come their way.

According to an article in the Casper Star-Tribune, the three girls who tried starting a food fight were ticketed ($60 fine) and given a three day suspension.

Two of the three parents had statements for the press.

One mother said the citation "might have been a little over the top ... when you think it was french fries."

Another parent said, "The ticket is something that's on her record now. I think that's a bit much for a french fry. They were not inciting a riot as the police chief says they were."

I think both parents are missing the point that the students were warned NOT to do this and that they did this anyway. They are also missing the point that their children tried to start a cafeteria wide food fight ... which to me sounds precisely like a riot.

You are absolutely right! I wonder about parents sometimes! What is the message that they are giving to their children? They need to go over the statement made in the follow-up article:

These things can degenerate into something a lot more harmful than simply throwing food," ... "At what point does somebody get hit with a piece of food and respond with a tray, and fists, and knees, and glasses, and cell phones and everything else?"

Oh well, these may be parents who need to learn the hard way.

Thanks for the follow-up article.

Well, at least one parent gets it. These girls learned a valuable lesson -- when authority says not to do something, gives you consequences of what will happen if you do it, AND you actually do it...there are consequences.

I'm glad they got suspended. It's the little things, not the big things, that add up to an environment where students don't learn.
