I want to know a little about my dissertation literature review. I mean do I simply quote what I read and summarize it? What am I required to do in the literature review section of my dissertation?

In general, a literature review is a meta analysis of books, conference proceedings, scholarly articles, dissertations, and other sources that are relevant to a particular issue, area of research, or theory. The review should provide a description, summary, and critical evaluation of each work. The purpose is to offer an overview of significant literature published on a topic.

The review itself should include:

1) An overview that describes the topic and lists the objectives under review.
2) Organization of works being reviewed into categories such as those for or against the position being considered
3) Compare/contrast of each piece of literature is similar to and different from others.
4) Conclude which pieces best support their position and explain your reasoning.

I would confirm this information with your supervising professor - as there may be components that your professor may want to see emphasized.
