Our district uses an electronic software program for attendance, grade book, report cards, etc., and the gradebook takes the students in a class and you can create your seating chart. Do you have something like this available?

I know one teacher who has an interesting way of creating a seating chart.

She lets the children sit wherever they want to the first day. This teacher makes notes of who sits by who. Then, she writes her own chart. None of the students get to sit by the friends they sat with on the first day.

I think this is kind of mean, but it is one way to do it. It certainly cuts down on talking for the first couple of weeks/months.

I always make my seating chart from Microsoft Power Point. I free style a hand drawing of my room, go home and create my room on power point. I then make several copies to have and write where I want each child. Hope that helps!

I agree the second link is really neat! I had to do a presentation for a class I'm taking on classroom management. Part of the presentation had to do with space management so I shared the links with them and also let them know it's not easy to find this online...

Thank You!

Another wonderful link for classroom layouts is the Classroom Architect website.

I like this one because it can be used by preschool and Kindergarten teachers very easily. There is more than tables and desks to put on the grid.

It's funny you should say that because I make mine in Excel even though we have such options in the grading program. It's simplicity is brilliant.

I'm going to use the powerpoint idea. I never thought of it before.

Excel is a good idea, but the program still scares me a bit. I've never be good at spreadsheets. I know it isn't the same when you're doing a seating chart, but I think I'm more comfortable with powerpoint, paint, or the drawing tool in word.

I make mine in Microsoft Word using the "tables" feature. By changing the number of columns on the page, I can have pretty much any setup I want.

I have one for forward-facing rows, one for center-facing rows, one for horseshoe arrangement, and two different sets of groups.

Our grade-attandance program has pictures, so I can put the pictures into the seating charts and easily print them to leave for subs.

Unfortunately I haven't found a good seating chart online. I have tried the Microsoft table, but I have a difficult time with it.

I second Boxcar's idea of allowing the children to sit wherever they want the first day and take notes on who is talking to who. This way you can keep friends away from each other. My wife teachs 5th grade and has used this method for the last five years and it has worked every time.
