I am a assistant teacher and I understand that I sometimes have to do things the teachers don't want to. One in particular is really upsetting me and I don't know if I'm right or not. The preschool I work at get's our student's lunches from another private school in the area. They do not deliver so someone has to pick them up everyday. In the past we had a volunteer. She quit so another assistant was doing it. A couple months ago I was asked to pick lunch up. I did it thinking it was a one time deal. Since then, I have to do it 3 times a week. I have to stop what I'm doing, drive to the school, carry the bags(heavy), drive back to my school, then get it laid out for lunch. It is not in my job description and I am not getting reimbursed for gas. I worry about getting in an accident, wear & tear on my car, gas prices. I have not told my director yet because I hate to complain but I am getting angry!! :mad:What do you think? Is it reasonable for them to have me pick up lunch?
Sorry so long!

I think you should be reimbursed for the gas mileage. Our school has a form you fill out on any trips you make in your own car. Yes I think this is above the call of duty.

It is not unreasonable for them to ask you to do this but I agree that you should get gas mileage. With gas at $2.99 in my area, you're spending money driving from point A to point B and back again.
Why don't you do this? Use your odometer to figure out how far it is to drive to this other place and back again.
Figure out how much you're spending on gas based on average rates in your area.
Multipy this amount by the number of times you do this per week.
Go to your director with figures in hand and respectfully request reimbursement for gas expenses.

I think that it is unreasonable for your supervisors to have you to pick up the lunches without reimbursing you mileage. When one uses ones own vehicle for school business, one get reimburse for the mileage. There is a school district form for this. You can also include this on your income tax, instead.
Look at your job description. It is very possible that getting the lunches comes under, "... to perform duties under the direction of ..." However, this does not mean that you have to leave the building to go miles away in order to perform these duties, nor to have to carry heavy boxes without assistance. It definately does not mean that you must use your personal vehicle or personal "anything" to perform any of these duties.
Personally, I would speak to my supervisor and let him/her know that, although I was doing the class a favor by getting the lunches in my personal vehicle, I can no longer do this favor because of the wear and tear on my car, the high cost of gas, and the fact that the heaviness of the lunches is affecting my physical health. And, I do believe that your auto insurance might be affected because your insurance is not for a work vehicle. (Check this out, I may be wrong.)
You do have the right to be angry to be placed in this position. :( Nip this "duty" in the bud asap!

Along with the others, ask about reimbursement of expenses. You might also mention that if someone else also helped unload, the food would be served sooner and hotter.
