I am not here to complain about a sub. She always did a great job for me. I am just going to tell you what happened to her in my class one day.
I teach a greenhouse management class and our greenhouse is across the student parking lot from my classroom. I had most of my students out on a trip one day and there were only 2 or 3 left in Greenhouse. Their assignment that day was to water the greenhouse. As they were walking across the parking lot, the sub tripped and hit her face on the bumper of a car, bloodying her nose. The kids (high school boys) freaked out and one ran back into the building for the principal. She refused to go home and went out with the kids anyway. When they finished and came back in, she called her husband to bring her a new shirt as hers was covered in blood. Of course, I got the dramatic story when we got back and was shocked. I think if I fell down at school and busted my face open, I would have just gone home to plaster my face with ice packs (and to avoid the stares of the kids of my swollen face). I don't think she subbed for me after that even after I promised not to make her go to the greenhouse again.

Ouch!

Did she fill out an accident report? At my school we're required to fill out same day accident reports to document what happened. These reports are necessary just in case an employee files a request for workman's comp because of a job related injury. We also require any employee who is injured at work to see a doctor. The medical report supplements the accident report.

I once had a manager fall off a step ladder and land on her butt. She thought it was funny and put up a fuss when I had her fill out an accident report. She was less amused when I sent her to see a doctor. As things turned out, it's a good thing I did this. She experienced severe back pain and was unable to work for several days. My district took care of her medical expenses - but only because SOP had been followed.

That's awful. I can believe that she didn't want to go home. I would have definitely went home.

Poor sub. That must have hurt.

I think I would have stayed too. i would have felt silly leaving if I wasn't incapcitated.

I'm glad your students were sweet to her. It would have been so much worse if they weren't.

I don't know if she filled out an accident report or not. Knowing our school nurse - she did. We didn't get back from our trip until about 11pm and had another the next day (Friday) and wasn't back in school until Monday.

These big tough guys in class were freaking out and showing their true nature as overgrown marshmallows.

My goodness...I feel so bad for her.....I would have made sure everything was taken care of and then left.....The students didn't need to see all the blood and bruises on the poor lady....It's hard enough being a sub......yikes....God love her....

At least you know she's dedicated. Hopefully she will forgive and come back to sub in your classroom. You can't let the good ones get away.
