As one of our seasonal culinary arts activities, my beginning students assembled three dimensional Christmas trees using sugar cookies.

We baked sugar cookies using a variety of different shaped stars. We then used gingerbread house icing glue to glue the cookies together.

To make this glue, mix 2 egg whites with 2 teaspoons of water, 3 cups of powdered sugar and 1/8 teaspoon of cream of tartar (found in the herbs and spice section of the supermarket).

Assembly is very easy. The biggest cookie goes on the bottom. Icing glue is applied to the center of the cookie and a second large cookie is added on top. Turn the cookie so the points of the star are not directly over the cookie that's beneath. Apply icing glue and add a succession of smaller cookies on top.

A candy star may be placed on top of the tree or use a paring knife to cut the point off of a small star. Use icing glue to cement the point of the star on top of the tree.

3-D Christmas tree cookies make unusual gifts. I plan to use the cookies we made as the centerpiece for seasonal cookie platters that we'll sell.

We'll put the tree in the center of the platter and surround it with Russian tea cookies, sliced fruit bread, pieces of fudge, gingerbread men and so forth.
