Do you play music in your classroom? I used to play classical in the classroom when the kids were entering the classroom in the morning. It seemed to settle them down. I wonder how they would react to heavy metal?

I hope you're joking about playing heavy metal at school.
There are many people who might find heavy metal to be objectionable. For example, Black Sabbath and Slayer seem to enjoy playing songs about death. Other groups have played songs that appear to celebrate the use of drugs and casual sex.
During the 1980s, the U.S. COngress actually considered the possibility of regulating the popular music industry due to objectional lyrics in heavy metal songs.
During the 1990s, Judas Priest was sued after two people shot themselves, allagedly after hearing the repeated refrain of "do it" in one of his songs.
According to a research study conducted by Roberts and Christenson in 2001, "The angry, depressive, and violent lyrics of hard rock and heavy metal music may be a risk factor for suicide and violence for those adolescents who are already depressed and alienated, suicidal, have drug, alcohol and family problems or are alienated at school."
This theory is supported by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

I like to play music in my room. It helps the students to focus and settle in to the school day. The loved it and I liked hearing the music. It also helped to keep the voice low because the students wanted to hear the music so they didn't talk as loudly.

Music can be used in so many ways. I think it should be a part of every classroom.

Oh, I forgot to add this:
You can get songs without lyrics, if you are worried about offending someone. The kids will still get the feel of the music without all the negativity.

I often play music in class, basically from various genres since different activities require different atmosphere. I played heavy metal at one time and it certainly speed up their working pace. I'm not planning in using heavy metal often though ;)

That's cool that you used heavy metal.
I really like how music can make things go at quicker or slower paces. It is amazing how responsive humans are to music.

Heavy metal is a little extreme, even for older kids, and you may have some parents who are opposed to their children hearing it. I play classical music, and I will also stream Radio Disney on the internet for them usually on Fridays or before a Holiday Break.

Love it. Love playing music in the classroom. It soothes me as well as the kids. I also like to use little songs, musical activities as lesson breaks or to cue in a new topic e.g. drumming out "mathematics everybody loves it "(just using two fingers on our desks) while chanting it as we get started gets the energy levels up for maths.
I did try ambient rainsforest, bird songs, whale songs for a while but they didn't go down too well. Funnily enough andrea boccelli is the favourite with my autism class. They love male voices and to really get the party started we love the Wiggles!
