I found out today that the first 3 weeks of school, I will need be in my lab because they are using the computers for some kind of testing. Therefore, I will be teaching technology in the classroom but WITHOUT computers. My principal suggested I set up the overhead with my laptop and go from room to room. However, the overhead that I would have used is now broke. And all the others are in use.

I am hoping someone can help me generate some ideas. I know what I'm doing with 3rd through 6th. However, I have no clue what to do with first and second (this is the first year I'm teaching first grade). Aside from reviewing my rules and parts of a computer, I don't just want to do worksheets. I want to get them excited. Any thoughts?

I appreciate all your help!

Wow that is tough. I did a search looking for a reading rainbow or something and could not find one.

Yikes!

Having been a technology teacher in the past, I can understand what a big dilemma that is. It's like teaching reading without the written word.

If you can get an old computer, maybe you throw it on a cart and use it to show them the parts on the inside? That age group is really visual and tactile, so they'd probably enjoy that. And each lesson go over the lab rules and etiquette, in a circle time setting and maybe with physical roleplay? Get them to act everything out, and that will at least take longer than just verbally reviewing the rules.

Do you use United Streaming at your school? Show them a video from United Streaming that goes with the curriculum.

Another idea, navigate a site, for example, Dr. Seuss, and have a group activity to go with it.

Create something as a class.... Write a story and type it into the computer??

Review internet safety, let them make up the class rules

Are there computers in the classrooms that they can do group work on?

Will you have access to a computer with the internet in any of the classrooms you will be in?
