I work in a special education school. Tomorrow I tell my ED secondary students, who expect me to be at school next year, as I have worked there for 20 years, that I will not be coming back next year. My assistant, whom I had hoped would step up, is also leaving. I am no longer 35, 45, not even 55 yrs old. I need time for my husband, for me, for us, for my grandchildren.
This is a huge struggle for me, but I will normalize change as normal, and necessary. In the 20 years I have worked there, never have I known both teacher and TA to leave. They are going to feel exremely abandoned and wil personalize as ED kids do.
I am saying goodbye to all my students: past ,( who continue to call me,) present, ( my 9 guys) and future, the younger kids who pop intermittently into my room, and tell me they want to be in my class someday. Plus, to the staff I have grown with in so many ways.
