I am a 1st year Reading teacher and I have recently aquired a student who is in the 6th grade but his reading level is around third. He confuses his ds for bs and his ps for qs. the th sound is a f sound and although he can pronounce concentration the word weird or lonely is hard for him. What can I do to help him these last weeks of school?

Get him to the Special Education office for an assessment, quickly.

I work at an alternative school. This is a school for children who are not allowed back into public school for various reasons.
Special Ed does not come over for them since the program has small class size. The class size ranges from 10-14 students. But believe you me, it is hard when the students that you have have such a big range of abilities... However we are getting more and more students from special ed. I have talked to his case worker and to the special ed dep. for help for him, but nothing has come about. What to do?I don't know. I am in unfamilar territory.
Have you tried speaking to your administrator about this?

If you write the word bed in lowercase manuscript and then draw the shape around the word, you get a picture that looks kind of like a bed.
Also, recite the alphabet (a, b, c, d, et.) and hold your hands palms facing you. Make 2 fists with your thumbs up. Your left hand hands resembles a lower case b and your right hand resembles a lower case d. And, best of all, your hands are in alphabetical order.

In my school district, maybe even the state, I don't know, we do not allow special needs students to go to the alternative school. Instead they are in an EBD unit in the school building.

Except when that 6th grader gets pissed off that you are forcing him to do kindergarden work and refuses to recite the alphabet

sounds like dyslexia. I know there are programs that help students learn to read and study with that disorder.

I've heard kinesthetic teaching help some individuals who are struggling in this way.

I have that! My 6th grader is now reading at a begining 1st grade level. They don't realize that they need to go back to the basics. This is my first year working with him and the teacher in the past gave him a sense of learned helplessness. She basically did everything for him where I make him work. Very frustrating.

Oh, I'm so glad things are going better. :)
