View Full Version : Blacktop Games
Our PTA is looking to add to the games that are painted on our blacktop. So far, we already have hopscotch, 4 square, & a giant map of the U.S.A.
We need ideas for games to be painted on our blacktop!
Help!

You hit all the ones I would have thought of, LOVE the US map!
What about just a big map of your state with a bunch of the cities and rivers shown?
It's not a game and kids in elementary school don't normally study chemistry but the science geek in me would want a big periodic table of elements :D. However, on that thought train, you could do a number table 1 to 100 - if it is big enough for the kids to step in the squares you could take math class outside sometimes and develop some games, even if it is just calling out "2 + 2" or whatever and having the kids run and stand on the right answer.
Great ideas! I especially love the math numbers idea.
I also am a fan of the Periodic Table!

we have a kickball diamond on ours, we use it everyday for recess
Jpolson,
Are the kickball bases painted on or do you bring out rubber bases?

Was wondering if you might create space for students to do chalk drawings or do graffiti. Also, if you will create a space for students who just want to do something quiet, such as, reading.
It might be interesting to lay out inspirational/motivational quotes, rhymes, etc. for the students to read in addition to the maps that they can explore.
Lastly, why not construct a few mazes for the students.

Love the idea of chalk drawings and graffiti. I have some chalk in the closet and was thinking about using the parking spaces outside for individual student assignments regarding photosynthesis and respiration.
1. What about tessellations or an art walk?
2. Cultures or holidays around the world?
3. Strategies for remembering things like Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally or certain strategies?
4. Biomes for science or themes in history? Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade could have a section that basically outlines the history of the course in which they are taking. Our sixth graders (I think) learn about ancient history, our seventh graders learn about modern world history, and the 8th graders learn more about local and state history. A history walk would be exciting.
5. Popular children's literature.
6. Can a space on the blacktop be set aside as incentives for students, especially the art students?
Do those help or am I totally just misunderstanding the question?

Love the idea of human checkers...and even chess for the upper grades. Ms Coffee Lover...another great idea! My students use chalk to do equations and drawings throughout the year...I never thought about each student getting their own "parking space". I can use the bus lane because there are lines but cars aren't allowed to park there and there are no buses there in the middle of the school day. I am working on electricity...so the next warm day, we are drawing circuits in the bus lane!!
Wow, I love all of your ideas!
Keep'em coming!
