No Jobs for Elementry Special ED teachers

I was told that there are no jobs for Elementry Special Ed teacher by NYC BOE.

I am having difficulty finding a job. My BA is not in Ed, but I am getting my masters in Education. I was told if you took all NYC test, you still can not get a job. You have to complete a full Ed program and then student teach, then apply for a job.

It makes it hard for students who would like to teach and make money to pay for the grad program.

I was actually shocked to find out that in many places in the US, you could teach without having the BEd. You can't do that here. We have to have a degree in whatever (I have a BFA), then a BEd (which you can get concurrently with your other degree if you know you want that entering university). We don't need a masters though.

Get your masters & national certification in Speech Pathology (ASHA CCC-SLP)...I get at least 3 phone calls and 3-4 mailings every week trying to lure me away from my job as a master's level school speech therapist (speech pathologist). If you are interested in speech and language, it's a great field...hard to get into graduate programs, and a few extra years in grad school doing practicums, but worth it to always be needed!

It is beginning to get really hard to find any job in NYC. I recently moved out of New York and the best advice that I can offer you is to try the surrounding areas. Maybe even northern New Jersey. I know the travel to and from might not be the best quality but they are always looking for teachers and the pay is almost the same as new york but it might be a little more. I used to live there too and I have friends who are teachers.

Arkansas is a great place to live and in dire need of special ed teachers!! Our state has even hired reg. ed teachers that agree to get their special ed license!!

There is a shortage of teachers including Special Education. If you like heat then this is the place for you.

Arizona has a great climate (not so much this time of year) AND we really need certified special education teachers.

I live in the Binghamton area and I know we are hurting for special education teachers! Most areas in NY are!!
