I have 3 children in my first grade class that realy struggle with reading. I was wondering if any of you have ideas or books that I could use with them. One in particular seems to forget everything he has learned.

Reading Milestones has some really simple stories with good pictures associated. They repeat the sight words over and over. Good luck!

It's hard give suggestions without knowing exactly what your students are struggling with. I assume it's decoding since they are first graders, but before they can decode they need a strong base in phonemic awareness. Also, do they know sight words? We use "Rainbow Words" at our school in both K and 1st. It's a motivational poster set for the classroom but it comes with parent letters and activities and really motivates our students. You can see it at www.RainbowWords.com

Another really good website for you to look at is "LIteracy COnnections" I have added this link for where to start looking for books for both teacher and students. Also go to the other sections, because the site is really great and will give you lots of ideas for both your struggling readers as well as teaching reading in general. Good luck! http://literacyconnections.com/LiteracyResources.php

You might want to try some sort of informal testing, to figure out exactly what they are having trouble with in terms of reading..

We have just implemented a school wide guided reading program. It is great. But, for those without a school wide program, I know just doing my reading groups with books the students can read works so well. My struggling students have really started to make up some ground. I am able to do reteaching as well as introduce new things with that group. I even had 2 students who didn't know all of the letter sounds and we are able to work on those daily for a few minutes, and they are almost at 100%. I think taking the time to work in small groups really has really made a huge difference in these children. It also works really well with my more advanced students who might get bored. I can find challenging high interest books for them, that challenge them and that they enjoy.

We use Stargazer's Reading Games for this phoenemic awareness and to generally improve students.

Repetition and consistency in reading is the key.
