Hi I am currently student teaching this semester in two different classrooms. The first one which I am in now is a special education classroom. I introduced myself this morning but I was wondering if there are any suggestions as to how I could have perhaps a better way to introduce myself to the next classroom that I will meet, any way to have a fun way for the students to get to know me better. I also was wondering if anybody has any advice on how to build good communication with the students or any advice on how to make the most on student teaching. I appreciate any advice Thank you so much :D

Well first of all, who are you teaching specifically right now? Special education, but what age? Inclusion or no? Who are the other class? What do you want to teach once you graduate?

I am teaching an autistic support 7th grade classroom, but they are probably around a 5th-6th grade level, and later on I will be in regular 5th grade classroom in 7 weeks.

"The First Days of School" by Wong is a good book that I have that has ideas for starting classrooms...this is mainly for teachers, but it gives some ideas that can be used for student teaching..

You know what I recently realized my 5th graders really liked? Pictures. Can you make a mini scrapbook about yourself? They like that kind of thing. And music. If you're not into hip-hop, maybe listen to some. I try to find "good" songs (school appropriate), and that gets alot of their attention.

I like to pack a gift bag of things that are "me" .
For example I put a coffee cup ( and joke that it is normally stuck to the end of my hand), a sea shell ( I love the beach)
dark chocolate ect..... Then as I take each item out I tell about myself. The kids love it.

javamomma, you have a unique way of creativity which is good...
I find it easier when dealing with special ed to allow them to come up with thinking that is bazaaar or even out of the box. then we build upon their initial mind set to create a total environment for their benefit.
Most Special ed or even gifted kids need to expand from their world and not be forced into different situations that may hamper their ability to learn.

I tell them my name, my number of years of teaching, and where I earned my degree. Then I begin the lesson. It sounds cold but I don't want to have one of those relationships with my students where they are questioning our relationship line of "buddy" or "teacher."
I haven't had a problem like that yet. Plus, they see me as a role model. They don't necessarily like me, but they trust me.
