Here's what they didn't tell me in school: paperwork, paperwork, paperwork. I am drowing in paperwork! I teach 5-7 social studies, and I have 140 students. There's so much paperwork. Also, don't be fooled about having a cush job. I'm at work everyday by 6:30 a.m. and I could easily stay well into the night if I was crazy enough to do so. I'm only posting on a Saturday because I'm taking a break from preparing for next week!
Everything else is manageable, or you'll have someone who can support you and help you. But the paperwork, it's all on you.
Testing is fine. There definetely should be testing. But I'd rather see the standardized testing at the end of the school year - lets say as a mean for transferring to the next grade. I think all classes should end with cumulative examination - to stimulate kids to work harder.
Pull-outs. I don't like inclusion. Unless the kid has good learning ability and his/her problem is of the bodily disfunctions.
Fragmented days - there are too many of them It's annoying.
Coperation - yes, we need to cooperate with other teachers, APs etc. It would be much easie if we would follow the common, well organized curriculum without ridiculous laps - such as, when I tech metric system in science in the beginning of the year and getting frustrated because kids keep missing the point - and math teachers are teaching it at the end of the year!
Amount of work, and paperwork - well, I bring it home, and my husband is upset...

Paperwork is a big deal. There is a lot of it. I teach primary and try to include all students; however, I have 2 autistic students with no language, 1 EBD student with no help at this time, 2 LD students, 2 title students, and 13 other students. There needs to be more communication between areas - primary and special ed about what rights are there for the two areas. Testing has become a big issue with NCLB. Too big - we are giving tests at the beginning of the year that we turn around and give at the end of the year (different form) - of course the children fail the test in the fall - they haven't had the skills. Then the title teachers can tell everyone how far they've come at the end of the year when they pass the test. Come on - use common sense. Check what the test is for and use it for that purpose. Sorry - seems like all negative. I enjoy teaching and the wonderful children - just sometimes all the senseless things that take away from the teaching.

I like what Exo said about standardized testing. It's not a popular opinion among teachers, but I support it.
Standardized testing is a good thing, even in the elementary grades, but it should definitely be at the END of the year... and in New York it takes us months to get the scores... I'd like faster scoring as well.
Pull-outs... holy cow those are a pain this year. I have kids pulled out at all different times for occupational therapy, reading, gifted class, speech, social worker group meeting, etc, etc, etc. And we're not supposed to "teach anything important" when kids arem issing. It's impossible.
Fragmented-- not sure what you mean. No, I don't think the days' scheduling itself makes it hard to get stuff done. There's enough teaching time, in my opinion. But it's just hard to find time when you have the whole class in the room at the same time.
Cooperation from teachers and principals-- yes, there's lots of cooperation in my school. Teachers share lessons and planning openly. Our principal is extremely supportive of our needs.
