Is anyone involved in their school with Smaller Learning Communities? If so, how are they going? What kind? How did you get it started? And are you WALL to WALL or individuial?

Is anyone involved in their school with Smaller Learning Communities?

Could you please give a quick explanation of what "Smaller Learning Communities" are? I've been a part of Professional Learning Communities, but I'm not familiar with the one you asked about.

My son's middle school is working with a new model of wings to create smaller learning communities. The school is divided into three wings, and three sets of teachers who work with students across grade levels 6-8 within the same wing. It seems to be working very nicely, except that friends were separated, and they do almost everything with their wing so no longer see some old friends even at lunch.
