I have begun using individual folders on the studnet server for my students to store their work. I am finding that many of them simply forget to save to their folder and just print everything. Has anyone else used portfolios? What kind of success/ disappoints have you had?
We have been using web folders in 2nd grade, however, it isn't easy for the students to remember the process to save. Our routine is to wait and save with teacher help.

We use portfolios in second grade. It is difficult for children to remember to SAVE everything. Children who forget to save their work have a logical consequence of losing it.
I am currently using folders for each student, saved to my District server. The problem that I have come across is that they occasionally save to other student's files. I do think that it is a valuable way to save students' work overall.

Sorry, Lara we have not used electric portfolio for children's work. It is not appropriate for our age level. We are still learning the alphabet.

I am using portolios also and my students have trouble remembering to save to their folders. When they do save, it is often to the wrong folder, or to the hard drive. I have tried taking them through each step of the process. I also am working with tech-savy students to train them in the proper procedure. Then they can help teach others. Any other suggestions will be helpful!

I have used portfolios and have found that students have accidentally clicked and dragged folders to other places. Also, students have misplaced their work by saving it to another student's folder. I have found that printing and saving a hard copy works well.

Lora, I use hard portfolios. Portfolios on the web are not appropriate for young students. It is a great way for students to write a final draft. We hope students read, write, and revise on a hard copy when they are very young.

I have not used portfolioes for my students because Kindergarten is not able to use this program. My students are just learning to recognize and type the letters on the keyboard.

I have had similar frustrastions. I keep a sign up in the computer lab that says "Save to the Folder."

We are not currently using folders in our Kindergarten classroom. We are still learning our homekeys and how to log on and off. This seems an excellent tool, however, for upper grades.

Lara,
First grade started near the end of the year to talk about electronic portfolios for the children's work. For most of the students, there are too many directions for saving work.
