Thank-You for the Thistle is a great book to teach alliteration and to increase writing skills by increasing usage of vivid verbs and descriptive words. First you read the class the story which is about Great Aunt Nellie and her nice nephew who watch in wild wonder at the wide window as the beautiful birds bite into the bountiful birdseed. Then you give the class a noun, (its fun to pick animals)and ask the class to think of an adjective that begins with the same letter. Next, you ask them to think of a verb with the same beginning letter. You continue this way till they have written a sentence. After the class has practiced as a group several times, you ask them to write a sentence on their own. You may want to give each student a letter of the alphabet so they can write an alphabet book and present it to the kindergardners. They really enjoy being creative!
